Caligula Thirteenth Earl of Eglinton Etched directly from Life ofCaligula, Roman Emperor, (c1590 1629). Caligula (12 41 AD) was the third Roman Emperor, ruling from 37 until he was assassinated in 41. Roman historians portray him as eccentric, depraved, cruel and insane, but some modern scholars question whether their accounts may have been biased or exaggerated.
