who came from a long line of carvers
There is some loss of stain along edges of the carving
as if the bird is hovering over or just lifting off of the water

I found it at the estate sale of an artist and gallerist on Newbury Street in Boston, who dealt mostly in Haitian art but had a wonderful, eclectic collection of handmade objects from around the world.
